Taiwan’s Far EasTone helps build Thailand highway electronic toll system
Far EasTone Electronic Toll Collection Company said Friday it worked with its Thai subsidiary and the BGSR consortium to build an electronic toll system for the M81 highway linking Bangkok and Kanchanaburi.
CNA reported that the system has started operations and marks a step forward in Thailand’s highway digitalization. It uses a free-flow toll system that lets vehicles pass without stopping, helping reduce traffic and shorten travel time. (Photo Credit: FETC)

Company officials said the system integrates artificial intelligence and Internet of Things technology to manage traffic and payments in real time. It uses advanced license plate recognition to identify vehicles accurately, even with Thailand’s more complex plate formats.
The system also supports multiple digital payment options, making it easier for drivers to pay tolls without cash. Officials said the platform can be expanded in the future to include more smart traffic management tools.
“The project highlights Taiwan’s ability to export smart infrastructure solutions overseas,” Far EasTone said. The company added that its technology can be adapted to different environments and transport systems.
Since the highway opened, travel time between Bangkok and Kanchanaburi has been reduced from nearly two hours to about 48 minutes. Daily traffic volume has reached around 55,000 vehicles on weekends, reflecting strong demand for the route, per Economic Daily News.
Liberty Times reported that Far EasTone is also working on the M6 highway project, a 196-kilometer route connecting central and northeastern Thailand. Parts of the road are already open, with full operation expected by 2028.
Far EasTone has supported Thailand’s highway projects since 2022, including work on the M9 route and ongoing system maintenance. Thai authorities said the toll system has improved traffic efficiency by five times and reduced fuel use and carbon emissions, bringing both economic and environmental benefits, per CTEE.
