Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei: 30 Years of Excellence, Sustainability, and Visionary Growth

Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei: 30 Years of Excellence, Sustainability, and Visionary Growth

Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei has stood as a symbol of luxury, hospitality, and innovation for three decades in the heart of Taipei. As the hotel marks its 30th anniversary, it reflects on a legacy built on impeccable service while embracing sustainability and modernization.

Since opening its doors, Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei has become synonymous with unforgettable moments, hosting weddings, anniversaries, corporate events, and countless special celebrations. “Creating new memories for our guests, especially for the local market, and continuing to innovate is really something that makes me proud,” says Shangri-La Far Eastern Area General Manager Marco Vazzoler.

To commemorate this milestone, the hotel launched a year-long celebration, blending nostalgia with contemporary charm. A range of exclusive offerings – including dining discounts, interactive social media contests, and scratch-and-win campaigns – have delighted both long-time patrons and first-time visitors.

The social media initiative invites guests to share their most cherished moments at the hotel. Participants stand a chance to win stays at Shangri-La properties worldwide, including destinations like Vancouver, Dubai, and London. Additionally, the hotel’s collaboration with the Make-A-Wish Foundation highlights its commitment to community engagement, with proceeds from the sale of the hotel’s anniversary teddy bear mascot, “Shan Shan,” going to support children in need.

Sustainability at the core

As part of Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework, the hotel has implemented transformative sustainability practices that touch every facet of its operations. From eliminating single-use plastics to sourcing biodegradable materials, these efforts align with Taiwan’s national goals for reducing waste and carbon emissions.

All guestrooms now feature refillable glass water bottles and larger, reusable dispensers for bathroom amenities. “Starting January 1, all single-use amenities, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and shower caps, will be provided only upon request,” says Vazzoler, reducing unnecessary waste. Meanwhile, the hotel’s five restaurants and three lounges emphasize sustainability with their “Rooted in Nature” initiative, which prioritizes locally sourced and responsibly produced ingredients.

Looking ahead, Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei is introducing biodegradable kitchen gloves across all its properties in Taiwan, showcasing how even small changes can make a big environmental impact. “In 2024, plastic reduction reached over 20% for the year. We are actively participating in reducing carbon emissions,” says Vazzoler.

2025: A year of ambition and innovation

With an eye on the future, the hotel is gearing up for an exciting 2025. Guests can anticipate a host of culinary experiences featuring Michelin-starred chefs and globally renowned mixologists. These collaborations aim to make fine dining more accessible while maintaining the Shangri-La standard of excellence.

Immersive experiences, such as chef-led cooking classes, will allow guests to learn directly from culinary masters, deepening their connection to world-class cuisine. “An elderly couple from southeastern Italy only started to travel in their 60s. The mother was forced to take a flight to visit her son, who was working for the Shangri-La in Singapore,” says Vazzoler. After offering to cook in the hotel’s Italian restaurant, the couple became a sensation among guests. Their culinary expertise has gone on touring Shangri-La locations across Asia. “Now, they’re unstoppable,” he says.

Recognizing the growing appeal of local travel and staycations, the hotel will expand its family-oriented offerings. Building on the success of past summer initiatives, Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei plans to introduce innovative urban escape experiences. Whether it’s a poolside retreat or family-friendly activities, the hotel is committed to offering a luxurious yet approachable staycation experience.

The hotel’s ESG agenda for 2025 goes beyond environmental initiatives. Its “Stay, Savor, Shine” program reflects its commitment to social responsibility and governance: “Stay” focuses on sustainable accommodations, “Savor” enhances dining experiences through local sourcing and reduced waste, and “Shine” emphasizes community engagement and team development. These initiatives aim to inspire not just the hotel’s guests but also its employees and the wider community.

As Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei celebrates 30 years of excellence, it remains committed to blending tradition with innovation, ensuring that it will continue to set the standard for luxury hospitality in Taipei and beyond, promising more memories, milestones, and moments to cherish.
