Far Eastern Group completed vertical integration of its chemical fiber, spinning, weaving, dyeing and apparel businesses in 1971, then further planned and invested in the upstream chemical fiber raw materials so as to ensure stable supply of key raw materials.
In compliance with government policy of promoting petrochemical industry, the Group set up Oriental Union Chemical Corporation in 1975 to produce Ethylene Glycol (EG), polyester raw material.
The Far Eastern Group later established the joint venture Far Eastern Brunner Mond & Co., (ICI) with British firm Brunner Mond & Co. for the production of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), a key raw material used in the production of polyester. The Group gained full ownership of this joint venture in 2008, at which time it had an annual capacity of 1 million tons, and renamed it the Oriental Petrochemical (Taiwan) Corporation. Furthermore, the Far Eastern Group tapped China's fast-growing polyester market by establishing the Oriental Petrochemical (Shanghai) Corporation, which began PTA production in Shanghai in 2006 and has achieved an annual production capacity of 740,000 tons.
Oriental Union Chemical Corporation has expanded its business lines to specialty chemical products and industrial gas, producing Ethanolamine (EA), Ethylene Carbonate (EC) and several other industrial gases. It launched a manufacturing base of Ethylene Oxide Derivatives (EOD) and EA in Yangzhou, China in 2008 and aggressively ventured into biotechnology and renewal energy developments as well as broadened its innovation scope to achieve the goal of diversified operations
Chiahui Power Corporation is the latest initiative of Far Eastern Group, leveraging its past experiences in waste heat recovery and utilization for power generation at cement plants and consistent with the government's long-term power development plans. Its current commercial operation output reaches 670,000 kilo watts.
